Jonah’s journey

From Gath-hepher by ship from Joppa, then to Nineveh · 4 stops · ≈ 1,000 km in straight lines

1234

Jonah never reached Tarshish: the storm came on the way. Where Tarshish lay is uncertain — it is often placed at Tartessos in Spain; others suggest Sardinia or Carthage. Where the fish put Jonah ashore, the text does not say.

Lines join the stops in the order of the text — the roads themselves are not known. Dashed: by ship. Pale: the site is uncertain.

Stops

  1. Gath-hepher2 Kgs 14:25This Jeroboam restored the boundary of Israel from Lebo-hamath to the Sea of the Arabah, according to the word that the LORD, the God of Israel, had spoken through His servant Jonah son of Amittai, the prophet from Gath-hepher.
  2. JoppaJonah 1:3Jonah, however, got up to flee to Tarshish, away from the presence of the LORD. He went down to Joppa and found a ship bound for Tarshish. So he paid the fare and went aboard to sail for Tarshish, away from the presence of the LORD.

  4. NinevehJonah 3:3This time Jonah got up and went to Nineveh, in accordance with the word of the LORD. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly great city, requiring a three-day journey.

Dotted: where the journey was headed — the text does not say it arrived there; the line goes on from the stop before.
