From David to Jesus
The genealogies of Matthew and Luke, side by side
Two genealogies of Jesus: Matthew’s through Solomon and the kings of Judah, Luke’s through Nathan. They meet in Shealtiel and Zerubbabel, part again, and end with Joseph. Every link is taken from its verse; where the books differ, the note says so and does not decide.
- DavidDavid and Bathsheba
Matthew counts “fourteen generations from Abraham to David, fourteen from David to the exile to Babylon, and fourteen from the exile to the Christ.” From David, Matthew follows Solomon and Luke follows Nathan.
Matt 1:6 · Luke 3:31- WifeBathsheba
Formerly the wife of Uriah the Hittite; Matthew calls her “Uriah’s wife.” Her first son by David died; 1 Chronicles names four sons born to her: Shimea, Shobab, Nathan and Solomon.
2 Sam 11:3 · 2 Sam 12:24 · 1 Chr 3:5
- Wife

- SolomonAccording to MatthewAlso called: Jedidiah · Mother: Bathsheba
Born to David and Bathsheba after their first son died; the LORD sent word through Nathan the prophet to name him Jedidiah. He succeeded his father as king.
2 Sam 12:24 · 1 Chr 3:5 · Matt 1:6 - JoramAccording to MatthewAlso called: Jehoram

Also called Azariah, as in most of 2 Kings and in 1 Chronicles, where his father is Amaziah.
Matt 1:8 - JosiahAccording to Matthew
Matthew: “Josiah the father of Jeconiah and his brothers at the time of the exile to Babylon.” 1 Chronicles names Jehoiakim between them: Jehoiakim was Josiah’s son, and Jeconiah Jehoiakim’s.
Matt 1:10 - JeconiahAccording to Matthew
Taken to Babylon in the exile. 1 Chronicles lists “the descendants of Jeconiah the captive,” Shealtiel first.
Matt 1:11 - ShealtielIn both genealogies
Here the two genealogies meet. Matthew and 1 Chronicles call him a son of Jeconiah; Luke, a son of Neri. By one view Luke’s Shealtiel and Zerubbabel are Matthew’s; by another, two other men of the same names.
Matt 1:12 · Luke 3:27 · 1 Chr 3:17 - ZerubbabelIn both genealogies
Governor of Judah after the exile, “Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel.” Here the lines part: Matthew goes on with Abiud, Luke with Rhesa. 1 Chronicles calls him a son of Pedaiah and names his children; neither Abiud nor Rhesa is among them.
Matt 1:12 · Luke 3:27 · Ezra 3:2 · Hag 1:1 - AbiudAccording to Matthew
From Abiud to Jacob, Matthew names men who appear nowhere else in the Bible.
