Descendants of Esau

Esau’s wives, sons and grandsons, the chiefs of Edom

Esau, also called Edom, with his wives, sons and grandsons as Genesis and 1 Chronicles list them; his sons by Oholibamah and his grandsons are also called chiefs. Genesis names his wives differently in two places — the notes give both. It also lists the Horites who lived in Seir, the kings who reigned in Edom and other chiefs of Edom; they are not drawn, because the text does not clearly link them to Esau’s family.

  1. EsauAlso called: Edom

Jacob’s elder twin, also called Edom, “the father of the Edomites.” He was forty when he took his first wives. Genesis says he also had daughters, but does not name them.

    Gen 25:25 · Gen 36:1 · Gen 36:9
    • Wife
      Adah

Daughter of Elon the Hittite, the mother of Eliphaz. Earlier, Genesis names Esau’s Hittite wives as Judith daughter of Beeri and “Basemath daughter of Elon the Hittite”; it does not say how the two lists relate.

      Gen 36:2 · Gen 36:4
    • Wife
      Oholibamah

“Daughter of Anah and granddaughter of Zibeon the Hivite,” the mother of Jeush, Jalam and Korah. She is not among the wives Genesis names earlier. The list of the Horites names an Anah son of Seir and an Anah son of Zibeon.

      Gen 36:2 · Gen 36:14
    • Wife
      Basemath

“Daughter of Ishmael and sister of Nebaioth,” the mother of Reuel. Earlier, Genesis gives the same description to Mahalath, whom Esau married after his Hittite wives, and the name Basemath to a daughter of Elon.

      Gen 36:3 · Gen 36:4
    1. EliphazMother: Adah

Esau’s firstborn, by Adah. His five sons, and Amalek, his son by the concubine Timna, are named among the chiefs of Edom.

      Gen 36:4 · Gen 36:10 · 1 Chr 1:35
      • Mother of his sons
        Timna

A concubine of Eliphaz, the mother of Amalek. The list of the Horites names a Timna who was Lotan’s sister, and a chief Timna is among the chiefs of Edom; the text does not say whether they are the same.

        Gen 36:12 · 1 Chr 1:36
      1. Teman

A chief. Genesis also speaks of “the land of the Temanites,” and Job’s friend Eliphaz is called “the Temanite”; the text does not say how they relate to this family.

        Gen 36:11 · Gen 36:15 · 1 Chr 1:36
      2. Kenaz

A chief. A chief Kenaz is also among the chiefs of Edom listed by their regions.

      3. AmalekMother: Timna

Son of Eliphaz by his concubine Timna, named among the chiefs of Eliphaz. Genesis names no sons of his.

        Gen 36:12 · Gen 36:16 · 1 Chr 1:36
    2. ReuelMother: Basemath

    4. KorahMother: Oholibamah
