The Man Bearing a Pitcher (L'homme à la cruche)

James Tissot · 1886–1894
Brooklyn Museum, New York

Along the foot of a huge wall of golden stone, a narrow path climbs towards the towers of the city. A man in a yellow tunic walks up it with a big water jar on his shoulder.

In the foreground two disciples, an older one in a dark brown cloak and a younger one in white, watch him and speak quietly to each other before following. The sky is grey with a streak of evening red.
