Suffer the Little Children to Come unto Me (Laisser venir à moi les petits enfants)
James Tissot · 1886–1894
Brooklyn Museum, New York
A crowd of mothers has gathered in a square with their children: babies on their arms and shoulders, small boys and girls sitting on the ground or pushing to the front. One woman carries a large basket on her head.
Jesus, in a white mantle, bends forward at the left and lays his hands on a child held out to him. Tissot gave the women veils and dresses in many soft colours and filled the sheet with faces.
