The Daughter of Jairus (La fille de Zäire)
James Tissot · 1886–1894
Brooklyn Museum, New York
Tissot set the healing outside the house, in a courtyard under a fig tree. The girl lies on a raised couch with a dark blue cover, and Jesus bends over her and takes her hand.
She has just sat up, and her mother, in a striped dress and veil, throws her arm around her. The old father kneels in front of the couch with his hands open. At the right, two disciples stand by the tree and watch.
From the text
- He takes the child’s father and mother and His own companions (Mark 5:40)
- “Talitha koum!” (Mark 5:41)
- “Immediately the girl got up” (Mark 5:42)
The artist’s own
- The scene in a courtyard rather than inside the house
- A fig tree shading the couch
