You Could Not Watch One Hour With Me (Vous n'avez pu veiller une heure avec moi)
James Tissot · 1886–1894
Brooklyn Museum, New York
Jesus has come back to the three disciples and stands over them in white, one hand resting on a rock. They lie on the ground wrapped in their cloaks, fast asleep; an old one sleeps with his head on his arm.
A low moon shines through the trees at the upper left. Tissot painted the garden in dark greens and browns, with Jesus’ pale robe the brightest thing in the night.
From the text
- “Jesus returned to the disciples and found them sleeping” (Matthew 26:40)
- “Were you not able to keep watch with Me for one hour?” (Matthew 26:40)
The artist’s own
- The moon rising behind the hill
- The sleepers wrapped tight in their cloaks
