The Last Supper: Judas Dipping his Hand in the Dish (La Céne. Judas met la main dans le plat)
James Tissot · 1886–1894
Brooklyn Museum, New York
Now the disciples recline on couches round the table, Roman fashion, leaning on cushions with their feet behind them. Tissot painted the room in brown and cream, lit by a star-shaped lamp overhead.
In the middle Jesus sits behind the table. Judas, in a brown robe, leans across to dip his hand into the dish with him, while the others turn to one another.
From the text
- “one of you will betray Me” (Matthew 26:21)
- “The one who has dipped his hand into the bowl with Me will betray Me” (Matthew 26:23)
The artist’s own
- Couches with cushions, for reclining at the meal
