My Soul is Sorrowful unto Death (Mon âme est triste jusqu'à la mort)

James Tissot · 1886–1894
Brooklyn Museum, New York

Jesus walks along a stony path in the garden at night, leaning against a rough wall of rocks with his head on his arm and his hand pressed to his chest. He wears a white robe with a yellow sash.

Above, on the rocks, the three disciples lie wrapped in their mantles. Tissot painted the scene in grey and green, with a faint light on the path.
