Venerable Peter of Galatia
Commemorated: February 14 (February 1, Old Style), December 8 (November 25, Old Style)
Life
Peter was a hermit from Galatia in Asia Minor. His life is known from the Religious History of Theodoret of Cyrrhus, whose own family turned to him for healing. He left home very young and for many years lived as a wandering monk, travelling widely in the Near East. At last he settled near Antioch in Syria, where he made his home in an empty tomb and kept a very strict rule of fasting and prayer. Theodoret tells that people came to him for help and that he cured a gravely ill woman with the sign of the cross. He died c. 429, in deep old age.
