Hieromartyr Clement, Pope of Rome

Commemorated: December 8 (November 25, Old Style)

Life

Clement was bishop of Rome at the end of the 1st century, the third or fourth after Peter by the lists. The First Epistle of Clement to the Corinthians, a letter of the Roman church to Corinth, is ascribed to him. Tradition says he was exiled under the emperor Trajan to Chersonesos in the Crimea, where he worked in the quarries and drew many to the faith.

On Trajan's order, according to his Life, he was drowned in the sea with an anchor tied to his neck, in 101. In 861 Constantine (Cyril) and Methodius, travelling in the Crimea, are said to have found his remains and brought them to Rome. On the same day the Church remembers Peter, bishop of Alexandria, who was beheaded in 311 during the persecution under Maximin Daia.
