Martyr Tryphon of Campsada near Apamea in Syria

Commemorated: February 14 (February 1, Old Style)

Life

Tryphon came from the village of Kampsada near Apamea in Phrygia, where, according to his Life, he tended geese as a boy. The Life tells that even as a youth he was known for healing the sick and driving out evil spirits, and that at seventeen he was summoned to Rome to free a daughter of Emperor Gordian from a demon. On his way home he gave the emperor's gifts to the poor.

When the persecution of Decius began (c. 250), Tryphon was brought to Nicaea before the eparch Aquilinus and tortured for refusing to sacrifice to Zeus. He was sentenced to be beheaded, but his Life says that he died in prayer before the sword fell. His body was carried back to his native Kampsada.
