Saint Euphrosyne, in the world Eudokia, Great Princess of Moscow

Commemorated: May 30 (May 17, Old Style), July 20 (July 7, Old Style)

Life

Eudokia, daughter of Prince Dmitry of Suzdal and Nizhny Novgorod, was married in 1366, at about thirteen, to the young Dmitry of Moscow, later called Donskoy; the match was meant to end the rivalry between Moscow and Suzdal. They were married for twenty-two years and had many children, among them Grand Prince Vasily I.

She founded the Ascension convent in the Moscow Kremlin. On 17 May 1407 she took the veil there with the name Euphrosyne, and she died a few weeks later, on 7 July. The cathedral of the convent where she was buried was destroyed in 1929; her remains were recovered and now rest in the Kremlin's Archangel Cathedral.
