Venerable Akakios of Sinai, mentioned in The Ladder
Commemorated: July 20 (July 7, Old Style)
Life
Acacius is known from one story told by John Climacus, abbot of the Sinai monastery, in his Ladder of Divine Ascent (6th–7th century), in the chapter on obedience. According to John, Acacius was a simple man who entered the monastery of a harsh elder, who beat and berated him. Acacius never complained and died within nine years. The elder then told a neighbour what had happened, and when they went to his grave and asked, “Brother Acacius, are you dead?”, the story says, the dead man answered that an obedient man does not die. John offers the tale as an example of patient obedience.
