Saint Andronicus, Apostle of the Seventy, and Saint Junia
Commemorated: May 30 (May 17, Old Style)
Life
Andronicus and Junia are greeted by St Paul at the end of his Letter to the Romans as his kinsmen and fellow prisoners, 'outstanding among the apostles', who had come to faith in Christ before him. Nothing more is known of them from the New Testament.
Tradition, retold by Dimitry of Rostov, counts Andronicus among the Seventy and makes him bishop in Pannonia, preaching far and wide with Junia as his helper. Their relics are said to have been found, with those of other martyrs, at Eugenius near Constantinople.
Retold briefly in our own words from: the Lives of the Saints by St Dimitry of Rostov (1902–1916).
