Ecce Homo and the Lithostrotos

In the Bible

Pilate brought Jesus out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe and said, “Here is the man!” He sat on the judgment seat at the Stone Pavement, Gabbatha.

John 19:5When Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe, Pilate said to them, “Here is the man!”
John 19:13When Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus out and sat on the judgment seat at a place called the Stone Pavement, which in Hebrew is Gabbatha.

Tradition

By tradition, this is the Pavement where Pilate judged Jesus, by the Antonia fortress. Archaeologists date the arch and the pavement to the 2nd century; another view places the judgment at Herod's palace.

Here today

The convent of the Sisters of Zion, founded in 1857; inside, part of a Roman arch and a large stone pavement scored with the boards of ancient games.
