Summit of Mount Athos

2,033 m above sea level

In the Bible

Jesus takes Peter, James and John up a high mountain and is transfigured before them; the Gospels do not name the mountain.

Matt 17:1–2After six days Jesus took with Him Peter, James, and John the brother of James, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. There He was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and His clothes became as white as the light.

Tradition

On the feast of the Transfiguration monks and pilgrims climb to the chapel on the summit for the night service. The climb is optional and long.

Here today

A bare marble peak with a small chapel of the Transfiguration; a little lower stands the chapel of the Mother of God with a shelter.
