The Sorrow of Saint Peter (La douleur de Saint Pierre)
James Tissot · 1886–1894
Brooklyn Museum, New York
Peter has rushed out of the courtyard into a dark street under an arch. He clutches his head with both hands and stumbles forward, his cloak swinging.
Behind him, a group of figures stands in shadow by the wall, and a lit window glows pink above. Tissot painted Peter large and close, filling the left of the sheet.
