The Resurrection of the Widow's Son at Nain (La résurrection du fils de la veuve de Naïm)

James Tissot · 1886–1894
Brooklyn Museum, New York

Two crowds meet at the gate of Nain: the funeral procession coming out under the stone arch, and the people following Jesus. Tissot packed the sheet with figures — mourners in white raise their arms, others press in to see.

In the centre the young man sits up on the open bier, still wrapped in white, while the bearers stop. Jesus stands beside him in white, and at the right a man plays a pipe, as at funerals.

From the text

  • The only son of a widow is carried out at the town gate (Luke 7:12)
  • “He went up and touched the coffin, and those carrying it stood still” (Luke 7:14)
  • “the dead man sat up and began to speak” (Luke 7:15)

The artist’s own

  • A piper among the mourners
  • The great arched gate of the town
