Jesus sits on the side of a fishing boat moored at the shore, with masts and rigging behind him, and talks with a hand raised. Some disciples sit in the boat around him.
The people stand on the beach with their backs to us: women in veils, men in striped cloaks, children carried on their parents’ arms and shoulders. Tissot painted the whole crowd in soft colours against the pale water.
