The Poor Lazarus at the Rich Man's Door (Le pauvre Lazare à la porte du riche)

James Tissot · 1886–1894
Brooklyn Museum, New York

Lazarus sits on the cobbles at the foot of a great stone staircase, a white cloth round his head and bandages on his legs, leaning on his staff with his hand to his face.

Thin dogs gather round him: one licks his leg, another curls asleep in the foreground. Further along the wall another poor man lies wrapped in white. The rich man and his feast are not shown.

From the text

  • “a beggar named Lazarus lay at his gate, covered with sores” (Luke 16:20)
  • “Even the dogs came and licked his sores” (Luke 16:21)

The artist’s own

  • The steps of a grand house instead of a gate
  • A second beggar by the wall
