The Lord Wept (Le Seigneur pleura)
James Tissot · 1886–1894
Brooklyn Museum, New York
Seen from just behind, Jesus rides a white donkey on a saddle-cloth and looks out over Jerusalem, which spreads below him in a haze of domes and walls. He lifts both hands towards the city.
Bearded men with palm branches stand close by at the right, and a crowd waits on the slope below. Tissot’s title, The Lord Wept, follows Luke; we cannot see his face.
From the text
- “As Jesus approached Jerusalem and saw the city, He wept over it” (Luke 19:41)
- “If only you had known on this day what would bring you peace!” (Luke 19:42)
The artist’s own
- Jesus seen from behind, his face hidden
- The whole city spread out below
