The Brow of the Hill near Nazareth (L'escarpement de Nazareth)
James Tissot · 1886–1894
Brooklyn Museum, New York
An angry crowd fills a path that runs along the edge of a cliff above a deep ravine. At the top they shout and wave their arms; lower down, others push forward along the path.
In the middle, alone on the rock, stands a quiet figure in a blue-grey mantle and white veil — Jesus walking away through them. Tissot drew the steep brown rock face with great care.
From the text
- They drive Him out of the town to the brow of the hill (Luke 4:29)
