One of the English paintings of about 1190–1200, perhaps from York, later bound into a picture life of Christ made in East Anglia. Strong outlines, gold leaf and bright blue, orange and green mark this older style.
Jesus, in a blue mantle, raises his hand. Lazarus sits up in a stone tomb, wrapped in a pink shroud, and the lid lies slanting across the front. A woman at the right holds her face.
From the text
- “Take away the stone” (John 11:39)
- He came out bound in strips of linen (John 11:44)
- Martha warns that he has been dead four days (John 11:39)
The artist’s own
- The tomb as a carved stone chest
- The lid painted as a long white slab
