The Resurrection of Lazarus (La résurrection de Lazare)
James Tissot · 1886–1894
Brooklyn Museum, New York
Tissot painted the tomb as a cave hollowed in the rock, seen from inside in brown and ochre shadows. Jesus stands on the steps at the entrance with his arm raised, and people crowd behind him in the opening.
At the bottom, in a grave cut into the floor, Lazarus rises in his white grave clothes, his face still bound. At the left two women — his sisters — start back in fear and wonder.
From the text
- “Lazarus, come out!” (John 11:43)
- He comes out “with his hands and feet bound in strips of linen, and his face wrapped in a cloth” (John 11:44)
The artist’s own
- The view from inside the tomb
- Lazarus rising from a grave in the floor
