Jesus Wept (Jésus pleura)

James Tissot · 1886–1894
Brooklyn Museum, New York

Jesus sits on a rock outside the village of Bethany, wrapped in white, with his face hidden in his hand. In front of him kneels Mary, her long hair loose over the ground.

Behind her stand mourners in dark and brown mantles; some hold their hands to their faces, an old man looks on. The flat-roofed stone houses of the village climb the hill behind them.
