From the prayer book of Cardinal Albrecht of Brandenburg, painted by Simon Bening in Bruges about 1525–1530. Here he painted a scene at night, lit only by torches.
Soldiers in armour and bright tunics crowd around Jesus, one pulling a rope around his neck, another dragging at his robe. Above the helmets rise halberds, a red banner and two blazing torches against a dark sky.
