Virginmartyr Theodosia of Tyre and Martyr Irene

Commemorated: April 16 (April 3, Old Style)

Life

Theodosia was a young woman from Tyre who had vowed to remain unmarried for God. According to the church historian Eusebius, who was in Palestine at the time, she came to Caesarea during the persecution under Emperor Diocletian's successors and saw Christian prisoners bound in front of the governor's court. She greeted them and asked for their prayers. For this she was seized and brought before the governor.

She was tortured with iron hooks and then, still alive, thrown into the sea, apparently on 2 April, in 307 or 308 according to different accounts; Butler gives her age as under eighteen. Her memory is kept on 3 April in the Julian calendar and is known in Rome, Constantinople and elsewhere.
