Venerable Nicetas the Confessor, Abbot of Medikion

Commemorated: April 16 (April 3, Old Style)

Life

Nicetas came from Caesarea in Bithynia and became a monk at the Medikion monastery under abbot Nicephorus, whom he succeeded as abbot. When Emperor Leo V, the Armenian, revived the Iconoclast policy, he summoned the abbots of the main monasteries to Constantinople. Nicetas was imprisoned and exiled; according to his Life, he and the other abbots were later pressed to take communion once with the Iconoclast-supporting Patriarch Theodotus, which he regretted.

He refused to return to his monastery and was sent to the island of Saint Glykeria, where he spent about six years until Leo was murdered in 820. Freed under Michael II, he settled in a quiet place north of Constantinople and died on 3 April 824. His body was taken to Medikion for burial.
