Virginmartyr Febronia of Nisibis
Commemorated: July 8 (June 25, Old Style)
Life
Febronia was a nun of a convent at Nisibis in Mesopotamia, placed there by her aunt, the abbess Briena, from the age of two. She was known for her learning, and on Fridays read Scripture to the sisters from behind a curtain. During Diocletian's persecution, around 304, the officer Selinus came to the city and arrested her. According to her Life, she refused to give up her faith through long tortures and was beheaded. The Life says it was written by Thomais, who became abbess after Briena and had seen these events.
