Orthodox · † 1228
Right-Believing Prince Peter, Tonsured David, and Princess Febronia, tonsured Evfrosinia, the Wonderworkers of Murom
Commemorated: July 8 (June 25, Old Style)
Life
Peter, prince of Murom, and his wife Febronia are remembered as a ruling couple known for justice, mercy to the poor and respect for monks and priests. Their Life says that in old age each took monastic vows, he as David and she as Euphrosyne, and that they died on the same day, traditionally dated 1228. The people of Murom buried them in one grave. A longer 16th-century Tale of Peter and Febronia, a literary work, adds their story of courtship, in which Febronia, a peasant woman, heals Peter. The Church counts them among the saints since the 1547 council, and in Russia their day is a feast of marriage and family.
