Venerable Zachariah the Recluse of Egypt

Commemorated: April 6 (March 24, Old Style)

Life

Zachariah was a 4th-century monk of Scetis in the Egyptian desert. He is usually identified with Zacharias, son of Carion, known from the Sayings of the Desert Fathers. His father had left his family to become a monk, and during a famine the boy was brought to live with him in Scetis.

The Sayings tell that when Abba Moses asked him what it is to be a monk, Zachariah took his cowl, laid it on the ground and trampled it, saying that unless a man is crushed like this he cannot be a monk. He died young.
