Venerable Theodore Trichinas “the Hair-Shirt Wearer”, hermit near Constantinople
Commemorated: May 3 (April 20, Old Style)
Life
Theodore was the son of a wealthy family of Constantinople who left his parents, wealth and standing to become a monk in a monastery in the wilderness. He lived with such severity that his face looked like that of a dead man, standing in prayer all night without covering his head in the frost, and wearing only a coarse hair shirt.
This earned him the name Trichinas, from the Greek for hair garment, and the monastery where he lived took the same name. According to his Life, he had power over evil spirits and worked many wonders before his death, and fragrant healing oil is said to have flowed from his relics afterwards. The sources give no dates for him.
Retold briefly in our own words from: the Lives of the Saints by St Dimitry of Rostov (1902–1916).
