Venerable Memnon the Wonderworker

Commemorated: May 12 (April 29, Old Style)

Life

Memnon was a monk from his youth who became abbot of a community of monks. According to his Life, he received a gift of working wonders: a spring is said to have appeared at his prayer on dry ground, he rescued ships caught in storms and drove away a swarm of locusts that was devouring the crops.

After many years of fasting he died in peace, and the Life says healings and the driving off of locusts continued at his tomb. Nothing is recorded of where or when he lived.

Retold briefly in our own words from: the Lives of the Saints by St Dimitry of Rostov (1902–1916).
