Nine Holy Martyrs of Cyzicus: Theognidus, Rufus, Antipater, Theostichus, Artemas, Magnus, Theodotus, Thaumasius, and Philemon

Commemorated: May 12 (April 29, Old Style)

Life

Nine martyrs, Theognidus, Rufus, Antipater, Theostichus, Artemas, Magnus, Theodotus, Thaumasius and Philemon, came from different cities and met in Cyzicus, on the Sea of Marmara, in the time of the persecutions before Constantine. They preached boldly against idol worship and were arrested and brought before the city's governor.

After repeated tortures and spells in prison, they refused to deny Christ and were beheaded and buried near the place. In Constantine's reign the Christians of Cyzicus found the bodies unharmed, moved them to a new church and recorded healings at the shrine. The Church dates the martyrdoms to 286–299.

Retold briefly in our own words from: the Lives of the Saints by St Dimitry of Rostov (1902–1916).
