Venerable Domnica of Constantinople
Commemorated: January 21 (January 8, Old Style)
Life
Domnica came to Constantinople from Carthage with four other young women in the reign of Theodosius the Great, while still a pagan. According to her Life, Archbishop Nectarius baptized her and made her a deaconess. On land outside the city she founded a convent dedicated to the prophet Zechariah and lived there with other virgins in fasting and prayer.
Her Life credits her with the gift of foreseeing the future and tells that she calmed a storm that threatened sailors by pouring blessed oil into the sea. She lived to a great age, into the reigns of Leo I and Zeno, and died c. 474, having foretold the time of her death.
