Saint Emilian the Confessor, Bishop of Cyzicus

Commemorated: January 21 (January 8, Old Style), August 21 (August 8, Old Style)

Life

Emilian was bishop of Cyzicus on the Sea of Marmara when Emperor Leo V the Armenian revived Iconoclasm in 815. He refused to give up the veneration of icons, was pressed again and again, imprisoned and finally sent into exile, where he died, c. 815–820. The Church remembers him as a confessor: one who suffered for the faith without being put to death.

Retold briefly in our own words from: the Lives of the Saints by St Dimitry of Rostov (1902–1916); the Roman Martyrology (1916).
