Venerable Athansius of Serpukhov and his disciple Athanasius

Commemorated: September 25 (September 12, Old Style)

Life

Athanasius was a monk of the Vysotsky monastery at Serpukhov, near Moscow, founded around 1374 at the invitation of Prince Vladimir of Serpukhov. The monastery's tradition names Athanasius the Elder, a disciple of Sergius of Radonezh, as its first abbot; he is remembered for the Greek-style icons and the Slavonic translations of Greek spiritual writings that his workshop produced, and is said to have died at Constantinople in about 1401.

His disciple and successor, Athanasius the Younger, led the community after him, guiding the brothers by example. After a long illness he died on 12 September 1395. An old manuscript calls him the new wonderworker of Serpukhov.
