Hieromartyr Autonomus the Bishop in Italy [his service is sung on the 11th]
Commemorated: September 25 (September 12, Old Style)
Life
Autonomus was a bishop in Italy who left his see when the persecution under Diocletian began and went to Bithynia, in Asia Minor. According to his Life, he preached in the village of Soreos, where he ordained the host Cornelius a priest and later a bishop, and also in Claudiopolis on the Black Sea and in the countryside.
He was killed around 313 in the church of the Archangel Michael at Soreos, during the liturgy: pagans from the nearby village of Limna, angered that local Christians had destroyed their idols, attacked the church and stoned him at the altar. A deaconess named Maria buried him. The Life adds that a church was later built over his grave and that his relics, found much later, were preserved without decay. His service is sung on the 11th.
