St. Arsenius the Bishop of Tver
Commemorated: March 15 (March 2, Old Style)
Life
Arsenius was born in Tver to a wealthy family. After his parents died he gave away his inheritance, freed his slaves and became a monk of the Kiev Caves Monastery. There he won the friendship of Cyprian, the future Metropolitan of Moscow, who took him to Moscow as his archdeacon and secretary.
In 1390, after a council removed the quarrelsome bishop of Tver, Prince Michael of Tver asked for Arsenius, a native of the city, and he was consecrated bishop. In 1394 he founded the Zheltikov Monastery near Tver in memory of the Kiev Caves, had the Kiev Caves Patericon copied for its monks, reconciled feuding princes, and carved his own stone tomb. He died in Lent of 1409.
