Hieromartyr Theodotus, Bishop of Cyrenia
Commemorated: March 15 (March 2, Old Style)
Life
Theodotus, a Galatian by birth and the son of Christian parents, came to Cyprus as a preacher and became bishop of Kyrenia. During the persecution under the emperor Licinius he did not wait to be arrested but went to the governor Sabinus himself and declared that he was the man they were looking for.
He was beaten, hung up and torn with iron hooks, made to walk in nailed shoes, and left in prison, where Christians wiped his festering wounds. When Constantine gave Christians freedom of worship, Theodotus was released, much against his wish to die for his faith. He returned to Kyrenia and governed his church for two more years before dying in peace, c. 326.
