Saint Meletius, Archbishop of Antioch

Commemorated: February 25 (February 12, Old Style)

Life

Meletius was first bishop of Sebaste in Armenia. In 360 a council at Antioch, where the Arian party was strong, chose him as archbishop, expecting him to share its views, and, as Theodoret writes, the whole city came out to meet him. But he soon confessed the faith of Nicaea, and Emperor Constantius sent him into exile. He was exiled three times in all, and for years Antioch was divided between rival bishops.

In 381 he presided over the Second Ecumenical Council in Constantinople. His Life tells that Emperor Theodosius had seen him in a dream crowning him and recognized him among all the bishops without being told who he was. Meletius died in Constantinople while the council was meeting, and his body was taken back to Antioch.
