Orthodox · † 1378
Saint Alexis, Metropolitan of Moscow and Wonderworker of All Russia
Commemorated: February 25 (February 12, Old Style)
Life
Alexis, baptized Eleutherius, was born in Moscow into a boyar family from Chernigov; the future Grand Prince Ivan Kalita was his godfather. His Life tells that at twelve, setting nets for birds, he fell asleep and heard a voice: 'Why labour in vain, Alexis? I will make you a fisher of men.' He became a monk at the Epiphany monastery in Moscow, later bishop of Vladimir, and in 1354 Patriarch Philotheus of Constantinople made him Metropolitan of Kiev and All Russia.
He travelled to the Golden Horde to pray for the blind khatun Taidula, who, by the Life's account, regained her sight. He guided the state while Dmitry Donskoy was a boy, and founded the Chudov and Andronikov monasteries. He died on 12 February 1378, aged about 85.
