Saint Jonah, Metropolitan of Moscow and Wonderworker of All Russia
Commemorated: April 13 (March 31, Old Style), June 28 (June 15, Old Style)
Life
Jonah came from Galich and became a monk at twelve. At the Simonov monastery in Moscow, the story goes, Metropolitan Photius found him asleep in the bakery after hard work, his hand curled as if giving a blessing, and foretold that he would be a bishop. He became bishop of Ryazan and Murom, and after Photius' death Grand Prince Vasily II chose him for metropolitan.
When he reached Constantinople, Isidore had already been appointed. Isidore accepted the union agreed at the Council of Florence, was rejected in Moscow and left for Rome. In 1448 Jonah was consecrated metropolitan by the Russian bishops themselves, the first chosen this way. During the Tatar attack on Moscow in 1451 he led processions around the walls. He died in 1461.
