Holy Prophet Amos
Commemorated: June 28 (June 15, Old Style)
Life
Amos is the third of the Twelve Minor Prophets. A herdsman and dresser of sycamore figs from Tekoa in Judah, he said of himself that he was no prophet nor a prophet's son, but the Lord took him from following the flock. In the mid-8th century BC, under Jeroboam II, he went north to the kingdom of Israel and spoke at the shrine of Bethel against the luxury of the rich and the oppression of the poor.
Amaziah, the priest of Bethel, accused him to the king and told him to go back to Judah. His words are kept in the Book of Amos. A later tradition holds that he was wounded by a son of Amaziah and died after returning to Tekoa.
