Saint Amphylochios, Bishop of Iconiun

Commemorated: December 6 (November 23, Old Style)

Life

Amphilochius was born at Caesarea in Cappadocia and was a cousin of Gregory of Nazianzus and a friend of Basil the Great. He first practised as a lawyer, then lived in solitude, and around 373 became bishop of Iconium (modern Konya). His Life says an angel appeared to him three nights in a row, and on the third consecrated him in a church whose doors opened of themselves.

He took part in the Council of Constantinople in 381 and opposed the Arian party. His Life tells that he went before the emperor Theodosius and bowed to him but not to his son, the young Arcadius. When the angry emperor drove him out, Amphilochius replied that God the Father also does not bear dishonour to His Son. Theodosius understood and issued orders against Arian meetings. He died after 394.
