Orthodox · † 1263
Repose of the Great Prince Alexander Nevsky, tonsured Alexei, Wonderworker of All Russia
Commemorated: December 6 (November 23, Old Style)
Life
Alexander Yaroslavich, born around 1220, became prince of Novgorod while still a youth. In 1240 he defeated a Swedish force on the Neva, which gave him the name Nevsky. In April 1242 he defeated the knights of the Livonian Order on the ice of Lake Peipus. He is remembered above all for managing relations with the Mongol Golden Horde, whose khans confirmed him as grand prince of Vladimir in 1252.
He travelled several times to the Horde to lessen the tribute and the demands on Rus. On the way home from his last journey he fell ill, took monastic vows with the name Alexis, and died at Gorodets on 14 November 1263 (Old Style). He was buried at Vladimir; the Church observes his repose on 23 November. He was canonized in 1547.
