Righteous Warrior Theodore of Sanaxar
Commemorated: August 5 (July 23, Old Style)
Life
Theodore Ushakov (1745–1817) was a Russian admiral. Born into a family of minor nobility in the Yaroslavl region, he served in the navy through the wars with the Ottoman Empire, commanding the Black Sea fleet in victories at Kerch, Tendra and Cape Kaliakra in 1790–91, and later in the Mediterranean, where in 1799 his ships took the island of Corfu. Accounts of his career say he lost no ship and no battle, and that he took care of his sailors.
Retired in 1807, he lived near the Sanaxar monastery in the Tambov region, giving to charity and helping to build the monastery’s church. He died in 1817. The Russian Church canonized him in 2001 as a righteous warrior.
