Martyrs Trophymos, Theophilos and 13 others in Lycia

Commemorated: August 5 (July 23, Old Style)

Life

Trophimus and Theophilus were martyrs in the reign of Diocletian, put to death with eleven other Christians, thirteen in all; the Church’s calendar places them in Lycia in Asia Minor. The account in St Dimitry of Rostov’s collection is short. When they refused to sacrifice to the idols and would not renounce Christ, they were hung up and torn with iron hooks and stoned, and their shins were broken. They were thrown on to a pyre, from which, according to the account, they came out unharmed. Their persecutor then ordered them beheaded by the sword. They are remembered c. 284–305.

Retold briefly in our own words from: the Lives of the Saints by St Dimitry of Rostov (1902–1916).
