Righteous Eudocimus of Cappadocia

Commemorated: August 13 (July 31, Old Style)

Life

Eudocimus came from a pious family in Cappadocia and served in the army in the reign of the emperor Theophilus (829–842). He became a commander of the Cappadocian regiment and governor of a district in the Charsian region, where he was known for fairness and for alms to the poor, orphans and widows, and for living modestly and chastely. He died at the age of thirty-three, after asking his household to bury him unwashed in the clothes he wore.

The account tells that sick people who came to his tomb were healed. When his mother came from Constantinople and had it opened after eighteen months, she saw his body unchanged. The local people would not let her take it away, and a priest-monk, Joseph, later took the relics secretly to Constantinople. He is remembered as a 9th-century layman.

Retold briefly in our own words from: the Lives of the Saints by St Dimitry of Rostov (1902–1916).
